The Big ONE-OH

Players of the Battlefield series may have noticed that DICE is having a week-long celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Battlefield games, which of course started in 2002 with the release in September of Battlefield 1942.

Their celebration includes cut-price games from Origin, the re-release of classic Battlefield trailers and wallpapers and other such stuff from earlier games. Oh yes and lots of cake in their offices.

From our perspective of course, the 1st Hussars will also be celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, having been formed while playing Battlefield 1942. This means one or more special get-together events with games ranging from the old Battlefield games to the new Battlefield games and various other games we have enjoyed over the years.

More details will be available once we work out what the hell we are doing.

Time, where did it go? (An apology)

by Hssr_admin
2 September 2012

Has it really been six months since the last update?

Well, I can only apologise for being a slacker in this regard. Things have been moving apace in the Hussars world so here are a few updates:

BATTLEFIELD 3:
Premium has been announced anad purchased, Close Quarters has arrived and now the next DLC (Armoured Kill) is almost upon us. DICE still insist upon huge infrequent patches despite the evidence that this doesn’t work very well and the community is (justly) angry about the Premium bonus content for August that was revealed.

BATTLEFIELD 4:
Yes. Not BC3 as many were expecting, but apparently DICE are also working on the next version of the franchise, to be released late next year. Too soon? Do we want another modern-day shooter from DICE? Lots of people are very wary of this and want to see solid evidence that this will be significantly better than BF3.

MEDAL OF HONOUR: DWARF FIGHTER:
This is due to be released this autumn doing head-to-head with Treyarch’s next CoD game – the futuristic Black Ops 2. Do either of these appeal to you? Do both of them appeal? CoD looks more cartoony but then so does MoH to a certain extent, although the latter is supposed to be a much more tactical game than BF3.

PLANETSIDE 2:
Like Battlefield 3? Want much bigger futuristic battles? Fancy dipping your toes into the world of MMOs? (Not really). Still, Plantside 2 seems to be getting some good reviews from BF3 players and will be free to play, so might be worth trying.

COMPANY OF HEROES 2:
FPS not your thing? Well, Company of Heroes has announced a sequel based in the Eastern Front. It looks rather splendid and boasts real unit line of sight and weather effects that actually change the way you play the game.

RACE07 and DIRT3:
A few Hussars have started getting together to play fun games of Dirt 3 (including Cat & Mouse), as well as racing using the more hardcore Race07 game for semi-regular trips around the famous racing circuits.

DCS:
Ploppy is still trying to drum up sopport for the highly realistic but equally hardcore flying combat sim DCS.

BLOODBOWL:
With the reappearance of Billy (what a year it has been for him!), the Bloodbowl league idea has started ocne again. After a test league we are about to launch into a league proper, with conestents joined by Dr Duck and even T@rty!

FORUMS:
In an effort to cut down the number of spam registrations on the forum I am toying with swapping to different software – in this case the free software SMF. I have a forum up at the moment and am trying to run a conversion tool to bring in the existing forum posts and settings.

That’s all for now – check out the forums for more information.

Are you Leaping?

No, not a reference to bunny hopping in games, but to the fact it is a leap year and this is the leapiest day.

So what is happening out there?
Well, not a lot to be honest.
The most popular game for the Hussars at the moment is still Battlefield 3, although some have drifted off in favour of other games, including the meme-generating epic Skyrim and the latest harder than hardcore flight sim from DCS – A-10.

Mostly we appear to be in a “slow news” period –
We are still waiting for DICE’s “huge patch” for BF3, which was originally supposed to be released by now but seems to include a vast number of welcome tweaks and changes.

We are still waiting for DICE/EA’s announcement about the next BF3 content.

We are STILL waiting for Relic/THQ to make an announcement about the next Company of Heroes game.

From a single player point of view we are waiting for Mass Effect 3, Max Payne 3 and (finally after two years) the PC version of  Alan Wake.

Still, as I still haven’t managed to get Skyrim I can’t really complain.

New Year, Old Friends

Happy New Year one and all. May this year bring you more of the nice things from last year and less of the nasty ones.

Hopefully this year we can get some solid multiplayer gaming time as well.

Starting on a sombre note, today (3rd January) is also the day we remember the untimely death of XDC’s Mugworth, an avid driver in the Hussars Cup Challenge. XDC have proposed a mark if respect in their BF3 server tonight, with a minute of silence for the lost clan mate.

Today is apparently a significant day for a lot of people, to do with Emperor Constantine and randomly placing a pin on a calendar, or something.

Anyway, wherever you are and however you are celebrating the festivities, have a great time and keep in touch with your families, whether close, extended or virtual.

It is also a good time to remember the real Hussars and other soldiers and sailors currently serving in postings away from their families. Raise a glass for them and wish them a safe and speedy return to their loved ones.

Huzzah!

Almost there ….

Waiting impatiently for Battlefield 3!

If there is one thing that makes no sense and encourages piracy, it is having different release dates for entertainment media in different countries. Whether films, videos games or music, it makes no sense to stagger the release dates.

Traditionally the retail industry is cited as being the cause (in the case of video games), so that in America, games are released on a Tuesday, whereas in the U.K. they are released on a Friday. That is all very well except there are two things that show this to be obfuscation, particularly in the case of Battlefield 3 (SHAME ON YOU EA):

1. It clearly has nothing to do with retail distribution. Look at the countries involved on the first release day (25th October): South America, West Indies, most of Asia, Russia and her neighbours, the far east – oh yes and the U.S.A. and Canada.  Then a two day gap after which Australasia, Antarctica(?), most of Europe and the Middle East are added. Then on Friday, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, South Africa, United Kingdom finally stagger in, with Japan trailing last next Wednesday. Huh?

2. Even if there is a logical reason for this staggered distribution, WHY DOES SOMEONE WHO PURCHASES A DIGITAL DOWNLOAD STILL HAVE TO WAIT?

Pah. Anyway, just two more days before those of us in the U.K. are allowed to start catching up.

BF3 Beta: Last few days sees Caspian Border available

Comments Off on BF3 Beta: Last few days sees Caspian Border available

Yes, as the beta draws to a close (it will finish tomorrow), DICE and EA have released the large Caspian Border map on PC for the community to play and test on.

Having played it a fair amount now, I have to say it is fantastic and certainly brings back memories of earlier Battlefield games. The frantic pushes to the command points, even more frantic defences of the same and the constant noise of aircraft buzzing through the skies really stirs up the old memories.

Interestingly, this map was released to test the performance with 64-player servers and so far that seems to be rather poor – many RSPs have dropped the servers back to 32 players because the game is far too laggy otherwise.

Battlefield 3 Beta

Battlefield 3 Open Beta – It’s here!

Yes, grab yourself a download of that annoying Origin thingy and fire up the single BF3 map available.

Sadly, in a nod to the CoD and BC2 crowd, they are showcasing the beta with a Rush map (and not a huge one) called Operation Metro. Although this is a good map (once you get past the choke point of the tunnel entrance) it doesn’t really show off the potential of BF3 – which is large scale conquest with vehicles.

Still, it is a good taster for what BF3 will feel like and personally I really like it.

What I like less is the layered applications they have used to let you get to the game – Origin itself which is an online store, game library/validator and in-game overlay (like Steam); battlog (or battleface as we have taken to calling this combination of server browser and facebook functionality), which requires a different friends list to Origin and manages the game lobby, stats pages and server browser, then finally there is the game itself.

Space Marine!

Space Marine has finally hit the shelves and digital downloaders. After a fairly tense Friday where various pre-ordered copies went AWOL, most people who want the game have managed to get their hands on it and have been experimenting with the campaign and online games.

Online is a blast (if you’ll excuse the pun) but is also incredibly unforgiving – starting off as a fledgling player and immediately being pitted against players of level 30-41 can be off-putting, although the ability to copy (replicate) the load-out of the person who just killed you does help in some regards as it allows you to access weapons and perks before you have unlocked them.
Still, expect to die a lot before you start getting the hang for what works and what doesn’t.

The Hussars Chapter
The Hussars have already started playing with the customisation tools and we are getting settled on a Hussars Chapter look.
